Brief History

  • The Atherton Tablelands is situated in the centre of the WET TROPICS WORLD HERITAGE AREA of Northern Queensland.  The area is divided into four districts - stretching from Cooktown in the north to Townsville in the south along a 400 km section or coastal ranges.  Then it continues west over the  rainforested mountains to the Atherton Tablelands.

  • The rural, relaxed atmosphere of the Tablelands offers an almost endless list of places to see including waterfalls, crater lakes, extinct volcanic craters and rainforests believed to be the world's oldest.  The weird and wonderful wildlife still fascinates both the locals and visitors alike.

  • When Europeans came in the 1890's, they began transforming the continuous forest cover into the rural landscape seen today.  The development of the timber, dairying and agricultural industries, along with the establishment of the railway, is a reminder of the work of the early pioneers.

  • A visual link with the hardships and lifestyle of the early settlers has been preserved through the lens of a gifted photographer, WILLIAM HENRY BUNKER, (Isabel is a great-grandaughter). His work appeared in the "Queenslander" and the "North Queensland Register" as well as in locally produced booklets, which showed the scenic wonders of the Tablelands and the advancing industries.

  • The early hardships and the extensions of the railway line, the clearance of the forests, the despatch of the giant timbers, the haulage of the great logs by bullock and horse teams, the construction of the townships, the weddings, child studies, schools and social gatherings - are all recorded through the lens of William Henry Bunker.

  • Isabel is fortunate to have on display in the home, many photographs and enlarged copies for guests to admire. Also, photographs are found at prominent places of interest throughout the Tablelands as a testament to his work and provide a visual insight into the history and heritage of the townships there.
