Twin Kauri Pines

Visit these luge 1100 year old pines on the shore of Lake Barrine, just a 2 minute walk from the tea house.  Wheelchair accessible.  You might like to continue on around the rainforested lake for the 6.5 km walk.

Only 25 minutes away, the larger of the twin crater lakes has been operating as a tourist destination since the 1920's.  Enjoy a lake cruise and visit the teahouse.  Take the 6.5 km circuit walk past the twin Kauris,where you'll encounter  the most amazing trees, birdlife, butterflies and wildlife you can imagine.  The Musky Rat-kangaroo,  Spotted Catbird, Victoria's Rifle Bird, Red-legged Pademelon or Double-eyed Parrots (Australia's smallest) .

Lake Eacham

Like Lake Barrine, this tranquil place is surrounded by rainforest with a circuit walk of 3 km.  Both lakes are explosive craters leaving the deep, crystal-clear lakes approximately 65 m deep.The lake is perfect for swimming and picnics with BBQ facilities.  Wheelchair accessible.  Over 180 species of birdlife have been spotted here.

Lake Tinaroo Dam

Lake Tinaroo has all-year round barramundi fishing and red-claw potting.  Sailing, canoeing, skiiing and fishing are favourite pastimes.  Over 200 bird species recorded here and many native animals.

Mt Hypipamee Crater and Dinner Falls

Just 24 km along the Kennedy Highway from Atherton is an unique geological oddity.  An extinct volcanic pipe was created by an explosion of gas rather than lava and left this crater of 70 m across, with  granite walls reaching 58 m down to the water which is 82 m deep.  The 400 m walk to the crater is Wheelchair accessible but not to the falls.

The easy-to-walk 1 km trail takes you down to the crystal clear waters of Dinner Falls where you can swim or picnic.  This in an ideal place to spot an occasional cassowary, Lumholtz-tree kangaroo or at night, 8 species of possum call it home.  Birdwatchers can often spot Golden Bowerbird, Fernwrens and Mountain Thornbills.

Yungaburra

Historic Village with the highest proportion of historical listed buildings outside of regional centres in Queensland.  Take the Heritage Walk around the village or the Peterson Creek Wildlife track and spot many birds and other wildlife such as platypus and Lumoltz Tree Kangaroo.  Yungaburra is renowned for its markets on the 4th Saturday of the month.  Everyday you can enjoy some of the best shopping in the gift,art and craft, antique and gem shops.  Award - winning restaurants are a major feature.




Curtain Fig Tree

Only 10 minutes away is this most visited tree in the world and is well in excess of 500 years old.  A short Wheelchair accessible walk reveals this magnificent strangler fig with its aerial roots that drop 15 metres to the earth.  The host tree is long gone and the enormous roots are now supported by another tree half way down, forming a living, growing curtain. 

The variety of birds and wildlife can be spotted early and late in the day.  Lumoltz Tree Kangaroo, rare Green Ring-tailed Possum, Bower's Shrike-Thrush and Rufous Owl are a few to look for.

Cathedral Fig

Discover this magnificent strangler fig with its canopy of epiphytes and basket ferns on the circuit drive around Lake Tinaroo.  Further along this road is Lake Euramoo (a double crater lake), Mobo Creek Crater and the Chimneys.

Giant Red Cedar

Not far from Lake Eacham is this huge tree, missed by loggers a century ago.  Unfortunately it became a victum of Cyclone Larry in 2006 and remains where it has fallen.

Malanda Falls & Enviromental Centre

Rainforested Enviromnental with picturesque waterfall.  Popular swimming and picnic spot with amenities and wheelchair accessible.  Only 15 minutes from Atherton, Malanda is the centre of the dairying industry in  the tropics and home to Malanda milk with the longest milk run in the world and the world-famous Millaa Millaa Cheese.

Enjoy a guided walk with a local Aboriginal Elder into the forest where tree kangaroos live and see platypus in the creek.  Visit the dairy museum and the longest continuously running picture theatre in Australia.

Waterfall Circuit

Only 45 minutes from Atherton, begin the highly recommended drive at Millaa Millaa Falls the much photographed bridal waterfall surrounded by rainforest.  Excellent for a swim.  Further on is Zillie and Ellinja Falls and  east is Mungalli Falls.
There are 6 falls within 15 kms and are only minutes away.

Millstream Falls





















Australia's widest falls is 5 km past Ravenshoe.  Continue on the Tully Falls road to see Little Millstream Falls and the breathtaking lookout over the sheer rock escarpment at Tully Falls - 295 m drop.  The drive is throughout pristine wilderness.
